Episode 69: Live at DePaul's Celebration of Slashers

This episode was recorded live at DePaul's Pop Culture Conference: A Celebration of Slashers!

Joined by the esteemed Dr. Karra Shimabukuro and Professor Danielle Meijer, Dawn posits the question: Were slasher films good for women or bad? You can probably guess the answer, but a wonderful time was had by all!

Dr. Karra Shimabukuro got her PhD in medieval and early modern English literature because she was interested in the origins of folkloric figures. Specifically, when she read Paradise Lost, she was interested in where Milton got his idea for Satan, why his portrayal was so different from others. She is interested in the intersection of folkloric figures, literary studies, and popular culture. Her work in medieval and early modern English literature allows her to see the origins of these figures. Folklore allows her to take a long view, from their origins, all the way through now, and popular culture. 

Her most recent work includes her book project “Devilish Leaders, Demonic Parliaments, and Diabolical Rebellions in Medieval and Early Modern English Literature,” and a book chapter that analyzes the role of the devil in the culture wars, and his connection to The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ.

Professor Danielle Meijer is an adjunct professor in philosophy at DePaul.  She's working on a book about child liberation and her favorite slasher film is "Who Can Kill a Child?" by Narciso Serrador.  

DePaul Pop Culture Conference is an annual fan/academic event at DePaul University. They host thoughtful discussions from fans, scholars, and media makers about popular culture and cult media. Each year's event is themed for an important Pop Culture anniversary.
