Episode 57: Through the Black Mirror
Love. War. Guilt. Hatred. Fear. Vengeance. Technology.
Since 2011, Black Mirror has been, in our humble opinion, the pinnacle of using technology, science fiction, and horror to delve deep into what makes humanity tick and how the human condition can be so easily twisted and manipulated. So obviously, we're gonna gush all over it in a super-sized episode!
Join Jen and Dawn as they take a look at the reflections of five of Black Mirror's best episodes: Fifteen Million Credits, White Bear, White Christmas, San Junipero and Men Against Fire.
Thanks always to The Shape for the intro and outro music. Now also featuring, "Fritz Was Here" by YoshiBlade (via OCRemix).
"Heaven is a Place On Earth" by Belinda Carlisle.
Now the show notes (so many show notes this week):
- For a list of local Houston-area charities you can donate to, see THIS ARTICLE on Houstonia.
- To support Life After Hate (the organization reaching out to white supremacists that was recently stripped of its funding by the Trump administration) go HERE.
- The TED talk by Megan Phelps-Roper, a former member of the Westboro Baptist Church, is HERE.
- And last but not least, that Extra Credits episode on Sesame Credit is HERE. Because it's from 2015, here's a 2017 article on it from CNBC HERE.
For a bonus, as Dawn was pulling clips for this episode, she stumbled across an excellent video essay on Men Against Fire that really delves into the de-humanization process on display. That video is by Alix Guichard and it's on YouTube HERE.
