Episode 64: The Shape of Guillermo del Toro

What do Gothic romance, fairy tale and old Hollywood have in common?

They make up the heart and soul of Guillermo del Toro's trilogy of masterpieces: The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth, and The Shape of Water. The master himself calls these films his cinematic soul, so let's take some time to peel back the layers and see how these three films look at reason, emotion, and fantasy, enthralling the audience (and your delighted) hosts.

Note: There were a few factual errors in this podcast. We know, we goofed, Dawn can't read her own handwriting. So here's the biggest mea culpa in podcast history and a list of corrections:

Early on, we mistakenly suggested that the Spanish Civil War was concurrent to WWII.  The Spanish Civil War technically ended before WWII started, although the foundations of the Civil War mirrored the overall rise of fascism in Europe and after the war was technically over, the fighting continued in more remote areas and characters make multiple references to WWII in Pan's Labyrinth. 

We got some dates wrong, we said The Devil's Backbone took place around 1944.  That should have been Pan's Labyrinth. The Devil's Backbone took place in 1939, during the last year of the war.

Javier Navarrete has worked with Guillermo before, just not on The Shape of Water - he was the composer for The Devil's Backbone. Regardless, he's awesome, listen to his work on Byzantium.

And last (but probably not least), Jacinto cuts Carlos' cheek early in The Devil's Backbone, not Jaime's. Names, am I right? (Probably not.)
